《无主之地2》为一款RPG风格合作FPS游戏，在《无主之地2》中的AI将会比一代有明显进步，敌人不再是一盘散沙。比如机器人会互相照顾，盗贼会爆发火拼；某些带有元素属性的生物（比如Fire Skag）会对该元素免疫，而一群没有元素属性的Skag小崽子在一只Fire Skag的激励下会变形为Fire Skag幼崽，它们将完全继承来自Fire Skag的元素属性。第二代游戏仍然扮演来自前作的自定义英雄，同时引入了名为“圣安德列斯风格”的升级系统。并且该作取消在线多人模式，支持合作模式。
游戏一共包含5个职业，狂枪手、刺客、魔女、突击兵以及械操控手。如果你对这些角色的外观或技能都不满意的话，也能透过Quick Change Machine去变更操控角色的长相，或是花点钱去重新分配技能点数。
